Diego Rivera’s America revisits a historical moment when the famed muralist and painter helped forge Mexican national identity in visual terms. More than any other artist of his time, Rivera imagined a shared American future in which unity, rather than division, was paramount.

Published to accompany a major exhibition highlighting the artist’s work in Mexico and the United States, this book presents celebrated paintings and drawings as well as fresco panels and mural sketches. It features work from the early 1920s through the mid-1940s—two crucial decades when he was at the peak of his international fame. Essays by leading experts on Rivera and modern Mexican art and culture illuminate his most important themes—from street markets to modern industry—and devote attention to iconic works, revealing fresh insights into his artistic process.

Published in association with University of California Press on the occasion of the exhibition Diego Rivera’s America, curated by James Oles with Maria Castro and co-organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (July 16, 2022–January 3, 2023) and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas (March 11–July 31, 2023)
