The SFMOMA Experimental Design Award recognized innovative and promising Bay Area designers in all areas of design practice. This publication celebrates the recipients of the inaugural award: architect Thom Faulders, furniture designer Donald Fortescue, and the graphic designers of Post Tool Design. All three awardees build on a tradition of craft and exhibit a strong knowledge of the materials native to their discipline — whether wood, typography and two-dimensional composition, or constituent elements of the built environment — and elaborate them into experiments that question the very notions of usability, comfort, and communication. Essays by Ruth Keffer highlight each designer’s approach and ideas, while illustrations of selected works encourage us to think more clearly about what it means to use a space, an object, or information.
